DAVIDPONTE is the co-founder of Momo and previous owner of Mocotó. Born in Brasil but raised in England, David brings his passion and considerable knowledge for world cuisines to his restaurants, including his latest venture, CABANA, which launched in November 2011 in London.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1964 to a French/Moroccan father and an English mother, David travelled back to South America, spending a year in Brasil when he left school.
In 1997 he teamed up with Mourad Mazouz, (later to become the man behind Mayfair’s Sketch), to create the highly successful Moroccan restaurant Momo. Winning the Evening Standard ‘Bar of the Year’ in its first year of trading, Momo got off to a flying start and still continues to impress twenty years later.
Then in 2007, David opening Mocotó, London’s first serious Brasilian boteco (bar) and restaurant in a unique setting in Knightsbridge designed by leading Brasilian architect Isay Weinfeld. Despite initial positive reviews, it was too soon for many Londoners to fully embrace Brasilian food and the restaurant closed.
For the last ten years, David has teamed up with seasoned restaurateur Jamie Barber, the man behind Hush, Kitchen Italia, Villandry and Sake No Hana. CABANA is their take on Brasilian food and opened in November 2011 with two sites, one at Central St Giles and the other at Westfield Stratford. Inspired by the traditional Brasilian churrascarias and local snacks found on most street corners from Sao Paulo to Salvador, CABANA reflects the more relaxed, vibrant and fun side of Brasilian food and culture. It has since grown to eight UK sites, with Middle East franchises currently under negotiation.
In 2014, David co-authored the Cabana Cookbook, and in 2016 the Carnival! street-food and cocktail book, both published by Quintain.
David lives in Hampstead with his wife and four children.
